Buckwheat Honey

Buckwheat honey is one of the darkest honey's available. It is prized for its rich molasses, malty flavor. Because it is a mono-floral honey its flavor is predictable and stable from year to year. It used to be easy to come by because buckwheat was a large crop in the United States up until the 60's. Now buckwheat honey is rare for several reasons, first the plant simply isn't being grown as much and second, it was the subject of studies that have proven that buckwheat honey in particular is better at curing coughs in children and soothing upper respiratory issues allowing for a better nights sleep. Darker honeys in general have higher antioxidants and buckwheat honey in particular is high in iron. Remember honey should not be given to children under the age of 1 but after that you may find some solace in knowing that you are giving your children a 100% natural treatment rather than some chemical concoction that doesn't even work as well.
